Famously regarded as the Pearl of the Orient,
Penang is very much an amalgam of the old and new, a small trading township
that has developed into a thriving industrial zone while still retaining it's
traditional character and mannerism, colonial heritage and oriental treasures.
Founded by Captain Francis Light in 1786, Penang
was the first British possession in Southeast Asia and was named Prince of
Wales Island in honour of the heir to the British throne. Its strategic location
in the north entry to the Straits of Malacca made it a popular harbour for
traders and shelter for immigrants from China, India, Arab and Europe of whom
have formed Penang's rich cultural diversity. Most of the colonial buildings
in Penang remain unscathed from World War allied bombings and unlike many
of the other states in Malaysia, Penang still retains its colonial street
names such as Anson Road, King Street, Queen Street, Union Street, Downing
Street, Macalister Road, Gurney Drive and Weld Quay. You will also find a
century-old church, a Chinese temple, an Indian temple and a Muslim mosque
all within a five-minute walk from each other in the midst of high rise condominiums.
Food Paradise for the gourmet travelers and
aptly nicknamed the food capital of Malaysia, Penang is widely noted as one
of the best places for great food at dirt cheap affordable prices. It was
even recognised by Time magazine in 2004 as having the "Best Street Food in
Asia", citing that nowhere else can such great tasting food be so cheap.
