Langkawi comprises an archipelago of 99 islands nestled off the coast of Kedah state in the far north-west of Peninsula Malaysia. It is an island of legends and myths, and is believed that Langkawi’s past controlled its destiny for seven generations.

Legend of Mahsuri, the most fabled story that has been told from generation after generation – is a tale of a pretty maiden responsible for Langkawi’s distress and turmoil for over 200 years. She is best remembered for her curse as she was accused of adultery and forcefully attacked by villagers. In her dying breath, she cursed, “For this act of injustice, Langkawi shall not prosper for seven generations to come” and the story went on to describe how she bled in the colour of white, signifying her innocence, and how the white blood flowed and flowed, and covered the land of Langkawi with her curse.

The island today still retains it’s rustic and laid-back life, with the majority of locals retaining their traditional way of living through fishing and farming.
