Cameron Highlands is located in the state of
Pahang, which is approximately 200km north of Kuala Lumpur and about 1,460
meters above sea level. Its cool and picturesque atmosphere makes it one of
the few favourite highland destinations for local Malaysians to escape the
hot tropical weather. It was first discovered by William Cameron, a British
surveyor who stumbled across the plateau in 1885 during a mapping expedition.
However, it was only in 1925 that Sir George Maxwell visited the highlands
and decided to develop it as a hill station and soon became a permanent British
army base and a popular holiday retreat for wealthy British residents and
government officials.
Today Cameron Highlands still retains much of
its colonial English village charm and one can still find many colonial houses
and buildings that have been converted into hotels or restaurants. Cameron
Highlands is also a leading producer of flowers and vegetables in Malaysia
and while you’re here, learn a little about the art of harvesting tea and
absorb the beautiful landscape while you enjoy a slow romantic stroll along
the steep mountainous trek. There are several locations in Cameron Highlands
which make for a perfect English garden wedding. One can also opt for a stylish
Victorian-theme wedding event or recreate the bygone 1920s classic era.
Getting there is no shortcut. We will need to
drive through the winding road up to the highlands which was first constructed
in 1931 by manual labour.
