Location
Malaysia consists of 14 states, of which 12 are located in the Peninsula Malaysia while the states of Sabah and Sarawak are located in the island of Borneo. Peninsula Malaysia is bordered by Thailand in the North and Singapore in the South. Sabah and Sarawak share the borders with Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Visa Requirement
Apart from a valid passport for at least six months on the arrival date to Malaysia, most tourists do not require a visa if the period is less than one month and the purpose of the visit is business or social. However, to name a few, nationals from Central African Republic, China, India, Myanmar, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Taiwan will require a Visa. Please check with the Malaysia Embassy at your respective country for further details before travelling.

People & Religion
A multi-racial population with 57% Malays and the rest consisting of Chinese, Indians, indigenous people and other ethnic groups. Islam is the national religion but other religions are practiced openly.

Languages
Bahasa Melayu is the national language but English is widely spoken. Most Malaysians also speak their mother tongue dialects such as Tamil, Hindu, Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien, Portuguese, etc. To get accustomed, here is the translation for some basic phrases in Bahasa Melayu:

Currency
Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) divided into 100 sen. Foreign currencies can easily be exchanged for Malaysian Ringgit at banks, money changers and in some hotels. Credit cards are widely accepted in most shops except smaller outlets, hawker centres and bazaars/markets.
